WHO IS MORE HARDWARE COMPATIBLE?
Initially, Vista was not hardware compatible and had to stress on it by large. The issue of scarcity is overcome by the issue of revalidation as most of the IT chops have come up with strict rules and regulations of what is and what is not accepted as a hardware configuration. Department of PC Engineering has been spending a significant time on testing and certifying the distinct combinations of the components, in the process finding the problem configurations and isolating them, thereby providing the needed guidelines of troubleshooting their help desks. Moving to Vista from XP would mean repeating these steps mentioned above and due to the immaturity if the drive of the Vista, many IT companies will target.
While the Windows XP has a much better, mature and well-vetted compatibility that comes with a huge support from almost each and every manufacturer. Vista, however is expected to come at par with XP in time because of the way the things are stood at this point.

THE CONCLUSION
If you recall, there would not have been a day when you would have been worried about the driver support in the Windows XP as it comes with an installed leading you to find the drivers of the XP longer than Vista even after your grandchildren.
