CONTROVERSIES AND ORIGIN OF GOOGLE

CONTROVERSIES AGAINST THE SITE GOOGLE

Overture Services sued Google for stealing their “idea” of Ad Words service but was settled out-of-court, as Google gave them some shares. Therefore with many of its rivals failing in the Internet marketplace, Google rose in stature generating revenue.

ORIGIN OF THE WORD “GOOGLE”

The word “Google” comes from a misspelling of the word “googol”, meaning 10100 which was represented by a 1 followed by one hundred zeros. As its use increased in everyday language, the verb “Google”, was added to the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary in 2006, meaning “to use the Google search for obtaining information on the Internet.”

PUBLICITY OF THE SITE AND ITS FINANCING

The first funding for Google was secured in 1998 with a US$100,000 contribution from Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems. After six months, a larger funding was secured with the rival venture capital firms Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sequoia Capital.

Though, Google was a rarely a co-investor. On 19 August 2004, took place the Google IPO with 19,605,052 shares offered at US$85 per share out of which 14,142,135 were floated by Google, and the rest 5,462,917 were offered by existing stockholders. Google got a market with the sale of US$1.67 billion leading to capitalization of more than US$23 billion. Almost 271 million shares remained with Google. Many employees became instant millionaires. Even Yahoo!, competitor of Google, benefited from the IPO as it had 8.4 million shares of Google as of 9 August 2004.

The performance of Google after its first IPO launch has gone well, hitting the shares with US$700 as a result of strong sales and earnings in the market and the release of new features eg. the desktop search function and the I Google personalized home page. This was primarily because of individual investors rather than large institutional investors and mutual funds.

The company is said to be on the list as the NASDAQ stock exchange

History Of GOOGLE

GOOGLE

ABOUT GOOGLE

Google is a American Public corporation founded in Menlo Park, California on 4th September 1998 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Its headquarters are located at Googleplex, Mountain View, United States and California. Its chairman is Dr. Eric E. Schmidt, Serget Brin as the technology President and Larry Page as the Products President. It earns its revenue from advertising related to its internet search, email, online mapping, office productivity, social networking and video sharing services of selling advertising free versions of technologies.

OF THE GOOGLE

Google began in January 1996 by Larry Page joined by Sergey Brin, two students of Ph.D. at Stanford University in California. They hypothesized that a search engine analyzing the relationship between websites produces better ranking of results than the existing techniques. They nicknamed their search engine as “Backrub” the checked back links to estimate the importance of a site. Convinced that the pages with the important links had to be relevant pages associated with the search. On 15th September 1997, the domain google.com from google.stanford.edu. was changed and the company was incorporated as Google Inc. on 4th September 1998 at a garage in Menlo Park.

The investment of the new company amounted to US$1.1 million, including a US$100,000.Outgrowing to two other sites, the company leased a complex in Mountain View at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway from Silicon Graphics (SGI) in 2003. The company remained at this location ever since known as the Googolplex. In 2006, Google bought the property from SGI for US$319 million.

Its search engine attracted the growing number of Internet users liking its simple design and usability. Google soon began selling advertisements associated with search keywords. They had text-based ads so that they could maintain an uncluttered page design and maximize page loading speed. Keywords were sold based on a combination of bid and click through, with bidding starting at US$.05 per click pioneered by Goto.com that became an Idea lab spin off and was the first company providing a pay-for-placement search service.

INNOVATION AND JOKES CREATION OF GOOGLE

by ayush on Jun.26, 2007, under GOOGLE, INNOVATION AND JOKES CREATION OF GOOGLE

INNOVATION TIME OFF ON THE GOOGLE

An interesting motivation technique called Innovation Time Off, Google engineers get encouraged to spend 20% of their time on projects that interest them, the examples being Gmail, Google News, Orkut, and Ad Sense.

JOKES CREATION ON GOOGLE

Google has been creating April Fool’s Day jokes eg. the Google MentalPlex featuring use of mental power to search the web. They claimed that pigeons were the secret behind their growing search engine and featured Google Lunar and a fictitious brain-boosting drink, called Google Gulp. They eve launched Google Romance that is a hypothetical online dating service and two joke products: a free wireless Internet service called TiSP (Toilet Internet Service Provider) where you could obtain a connection flushing one end of a fiber-optic cable down their toilet and waiting an hour for a “Plumbing Hardware Dispatcher (PHD)” to connect it to the Internet and the other being Gmail Paper allowing users of their free email service to have email messages printed and shipped to a snail mail address.

Google’s services contain Easter eggs; like, the Language Tools page offering the search interface in the Swedish Chef’s “Bork Bork Bork,” Pig Latin, “Hacker” , Elmer Fudd, and Klingon. Also, they have a search engine calculator providing the Answer to Life, the Universe, and everything you could imagine. Google’s search box can be used as a unit converter and a calculator. There are also some non-standard units such as the Smoot and routinely modifies its logo in accordance with various holidays or special events throughout the year, such as Christmas, Mother’s Day, etc.

HEADQUARTERS OF GOOGLE

“The Googolplex” is the headquarters of Google in California which means a googolplex being 1010100, or a one followed by a googol of zeros as the HQ is a complex of buildings. The lobby has a piano, lava lamps, old server clusters and projection of search queries on the wall with the hallways full of exercise balls and bicycles. Each employee can access the corporate recreation center.

Recreational amenities are scattered through the campus including workout room with weights and rowing machines, locker rooms, washers and dryers, a massage room, assorted video games, a baby grand piano, a pool table and ping pong, the recording room, snack rooms with various foods and drinks. Google moved into 311,000 square feet of office space in New York City, at 111 Eighth Ave in Manhattan designed and built for Google housing its largest advertising sales team that was instrumental in securing large partnerships, most recently deals with MySpace and .

They added an engineering staff in New York City responsible for more than 100 engineering projects including Google Maps, Google Spreadsheets etc. The building costs Google US$10 million per year as rent and has similar design and functionality to its Mountain View headquarters, including foosball, air hockey, and ping-pong tables and video game area.

The size of search is undisclosed. The site referred by the media as Project 02, was chosen for the availability of inexpensive hydroelectric power and large surplus of fiber optic cable. The computing center is the size of two football field that has created hundreds of construction jobs, causing local real estate prices to increase 40%. Google is taking steps to ensure that their operations are environmentally sound. The company had announced to install thousands of solar panels to provide upto 1.6 megawatts of electricity, to satisfy approx. 30% of the campus’ needs. The is the largest solar power constructed on a U.S. corporate campus and the largest on any corporate site in the world.
