Alan Wake is a bestselling horror writer where early in his career, his fiancée Alice was his muse. Just before meeting her, he started having strange dreams which he used as a material for his first book which was a very big success or a dream come true, in other words. But, soon Wake noticed that his fiancée vanished without a trace that completely devastated him as he could no longer. Though, his dreams stopped but he began to suffer from insomnia. At the beginning, Wake travels to a sleep clinic treat his condition located near the small town of Bright Falls, Washington, away from the stressful urban lifestyle. Receiving treatment at the clinic, Wake is able to sleep again but he meets a mysterious woman having the very image of his missing fiancée at the clinic everyday, uncannily so. His dreams return at once as terrible nightmares, this time. Wake writes a new book again based on those nightmares. Something horrible and wrong starts to happen to the town of Bright Falls as it starts to change to something awful bearing a close resemblance to Wake’s new book. Wake ends up fighting for his life with a gun and a flashlight in his hands, trying to understand what’s happening.
